Introducing EmmeNation’s first guest blogger of the week, Wendy Bain! We are so grateful to have her on board to share with us her personal story as a Mompreneur. Hope that everyone who reads this will be inspired. Happy Friday!
It started in a music class I was taking with my children. I have always loved to sing, and wanted to share my passion and introduce my young children to music. The teacher noticed my voice and the enthusiasm I brought to the class. “You should be teaching music to children” she said. After giving it some thought, I applied to become a teacher, and was sent for training and learned about early childhood music. I started teaching just a few classes each week to children as young as 2 months old on up to 4 years old.
I developed a following of mothers here in Bergen County over the many years I have been teaching. My class schedule grew, and I was eventually teaching 15 classes per week.
A year ago I was contacted by the bergenPAC in Englewood. They wanted to expand their beyondEDUCATION curriculum to include an early childhood educational music program. We created Music Speaks! It was designed as an age appropriate music and movement program for ages 2 months through 4 years old. We have also recorded our own CD’s of traditional and original children’s music with an updated twist, which each family receives when they register for a Music Speaks session.
I am happy that I have found what I love to do. I get to do it everyday. Every class is special and unique. Each child is special and unique. Seeing a child who comes into class clinging to his mother start to move to the beat of the music with a smile on his face is so rewarding. Watching children get that love of music is such a rewarding feeling.
The best part is that my family has loved and supported what I am doing. My class schedule allows me to take my children to school everyday, and pick them up most days as well. My boys, along with my husband, sing and make up some of the funniest songs. They all know the joy of making music. The boys stop me when they see a Mother and child, and say “Mom, you should give them a Music Speaks brochure”. They are the best promoters of my business! I love the saying: Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life.
It took me a while to find out what it was that I loved to do. Everyone should try to do it. What is your passion? What makes you smile? Find out what it is, and see if you can turn it into a business.
I loved this piece. I have known Wendy in her service to the Haworth music department at Haworth School for over a year now. She is a positive and inspiring person. As a neuroscientist I can speak to how important early music is to brain development and as a mother how important it is for social development. As a person, I feel privileged to know Wendy and be in the wake of her passion. Go Wendy!
Nicole, I couldn’t agree with you more. Thank you for your comment. Wendy is the real deal, and a good friend. I am inspired by her passion and dedication to bring music to impressionable minds, knowing full well the light to creativity and the love of music can pave the way to a full life of appreciation.
