Wouldn’t it be nice to start a new habit and actually stick to it? I mean, how many times a year do we start a new diet or a new exercise routine, and give up two weeks in? Let’s try something different. EmmeNation wants to help you stick to your goals this fall. Beginning a work out routine, meditation, or a new diet, here are some tricks and tips to help you get started!
1. Commit to 30 days at a time
You want to plan for the future but not too far ahead. Lifehack.org explained to us that 3 - 4 weeks is all it takes to make a habit automatic. There’s no need to feel overwhelmed, practice makes perfect.
2. Tend to your spiritual needs
Ask yourself: why is it that you are developing this new habit? MySuperChargedLife.com encourages us to recognize that there is a higher power and to pursue your faith regularly. By tending to your spiritual needs, you will live a full and rewarding life.
3. One habit at a time
I know we’d love to think that we are all masters at multitasking… but really it is a disservice to us. PickTheBrain.com says that focusing on one thing can allow for a habit to really stick to you, whereas trying to juggle 2 or 3 will result in recklessness.
4. Be imperfect
Nobody is perfect. Not one person. Be realistic and do not strive for perfection- simply strive to be a better you. LifeHack.org encourages you to try your best, but expect some bumps along the way.
5. Kaizen positive thinking
Cristina Diaz explains that “Kaizen is a Japanese word that means ‘improvement’ or ‘change for the better’, and it refers to the continuous improvement of processes in manufacturing.” Basically, you are adopting positive habits by “taking the smallest steps regularly”. Cristina gives out an example that if your goal was to exercise daily, with the kaizen way you could start by stretching while you’re watching TV. You will then gradually form the habit of exercising daily, without having to feel challenged or pressured.
6. Eat what makes you healthy…and happy!
When your body is not in a healthy condition, it is hard for your mind to set positive habits. No matter how busy your day is, remind yourself to try not to skip breakfast. One of the simplest things we forget as we’re living our everyday lives is that we need something in our system (that we need AND love) in order for our bodies and minds to function properly. Don’t pressure yourself into the most hardcore diet. Just like the kaizen way, take it one step at a time. Try taking the next step by substituting your sodas to a healthy protein shake, like this flaxseed drink, recommended by Jack Canfield.
